When we met Jina in 2010, she was a skinny little girl with a big heart and the most engaging personality. Determination and joy radiated off her face, even though she was a 12-year-old girl, single-handedly caring for her three brothers and her blind grandmother.

The weight of her world was squarely on her shoulders as she looked for clean water all day, every day. But because of a well Water is Basic drilled near her home in 2010, everything changed.

Today, Jina is 28 years old, a mother, and a recent medical school graduate.

Full stop.

Jina’s story is real, not an idea or a theory. In fact, if you’ve seen our short film Ru: Water is Life, you already know her. Thousands of people around the world have watched 12-year-old Jina make that grueling walk for water, over and over again.

But that fire and determination just needed a little break from the grind. She needed her family, including her grandmother, to stop getting sick from dirty water. Clean water gave her her time back. It enabled her to complete her education and pursue her dream of becoming a doctor.

Because of clean water, and because we were committed to going the distance with her, she will become one of the few female OB/GYN doctors in a country that leads the world in infant and maternal mortality rates.
