We keep clean water flowing in the most difficult places on Earth.

When you give to Water Is Basic, 100% of your donation goes towards repairing wells and educating well repair technicians in South Sudan. Through our Women's Well Repair Initiative, we equip women-led teams to repair over 1,000 wells per year, turning (and keeping) water back on for over 800,000 people in underprivileged communities.

At Water Is Basic, we believe women are the solution to the water crisis. Unlike other nonprofits, we educate and equip local women with the technical knowledge required to fix wells, creating skilled jobs for women while restoring clean water to communities one repair at a time.

Our goal, Vision 2030, is to ensure clean water access for the entirety of South Sudan in the next four years. We've developed a proven model to get us there, and by donating to our mission, you'll help us expand water access from two states to ten, so that every community in South Sudan has clean water access by 2030.

Why South Sudan?

According to UNICEF, 59% of people in South Sudan lack access to safe, clean water, mostly in rural communities. Having declared independence in 2011, South Sudan is the world's youngest country, and was pulled into a brutal civil war just two years later that destroyed much of the pre-exisiting water infrastructure.

Maria Amou Yel is one of 13 women who graduated from our well repair program in April 2023. Her small business provides clean water to her community and many others, and has afforded her the ability to pay for education for herself and her children.
