Water is BasicFebruary 8, 2010 2/8 - Photo of the Week![]() A woman carries two 5 gallon jerry cans from a Water is Basic well in Hai Atlabara, on the outskirts of Yei, Sudan. (click to enlarge image) Fetching water in Sudan is a daily chore, typically done by the women & children. Each morning, they walk from their tukel to the community well - or ground water hole - and fill their jerry cans. If they are lucky, the walk is only a few hundred meters, but for most, the trip is several kilometers. One full jerry can holds 5 gallons of water and weighs over 40 lbs. I can't imagine carrying one more than a few feet, let alone carrying two the distance the woman in this image has in front of her. <- Back to: News Item |
