The Mission

In March 2006, a week-long consultation of Sudanese pastors determined that their major health priority should be to provide clean water to the people of Sudan. In the months following, Water is Basic was born and we made it our mission to come alongside these Sudanese leaders in order to provide them with the equipment, experience and finances needed to drill wells for their people.

The vision of Water is Basic is to see a well drilled in every village in Sudan. We currently have two rigs - and all the necessary drilling equipment - in operation in Sudan. Each drilling team is staffed with Sudanese nationals who have been trained to drill, operate and repair their own water wells, empowering them to impact and sustain their communities. As the Sudanese work to provide the basic need of clean water, they see the health of their people transformed through a reduction in disease and death and peace sweep through areas where water shortages caused conflict.

The cost for a complete drilling rig and preparation of the drilling crews takes about 6 months and costs $200,000, but once in operation, a rig can drill one well every week for a mere $3,000 each. Since drilling began we have more than 100 wells in South Sudan - and each of those wells has forever transformed the living conditions of approximately 2,000 people.

Through Water is Basic, it only takes $1.50 to change someone's life. It is hard to find a situation where each dollar given can do so much.
